Laser Resurfacing FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How does fractional skin resurfacing work?
Tiny microscopic holes are made in the skin with the laser which stimulate new baby collagen and elastin to be formed. This has an instant skin tightening effect which helps minimise large pores, reduces acne scars, reduces excess oil production, smoothes skin, reduces breakouts and acne, exfoliates skin, smoothes skin whilst reducing fine lines & wrinkles.
Am I suitable for Laser treatment?
Treatment is suitable for most people and highly recommended for individuals wanting a brighter, more even skin tone, smoother skin texture with improved skin elasticity, a reduction of wrinkles, reduced pore size and improvement to scars (including acne scars) and stretch marks.
How long does laser resurfacing last on your face?
On average, clients can expect laser skin resurfacing results to last anywhere from 2-5 years from having their treatment. It takes 12 months to see full results from each treatment.
Which laser resurfacing is best?
At Fiji Skin Clinic we only invest in medical and surgical facial treatment equipment to ensure our treatments deliver results. We use the Lynton Lumina which is currently used in the NHS today.
Is Laser resurfacing better than FILLERS & Injectables
Laser resurfacing will definitely reduce fine lines & wrinkles as it stimulates new collagen & elastin. Fractional Laser Resurfacing will also tighten the skin, improve the texture of the skin and reducing open pores whilst deeply exfoliating the skin which injectables will not.
How many people do you see who invest in injectables but have dull, congested or lack lustre skin? The only thing that Laser resurfacing won’t do is relax the muscles. The combination of muscle relaxing injectables & Laser Resurfacing is also an option with no contraindications. We always advise waiting 4 weeks after injectables before having any laser treatment.
What are the cons of laser resurfacing?
There are very few cons about laser resurfacing other than the down time which is dependant on settings, the results are so worth it though (Down time can be from 2 – 7 days). With a thorough consultation there is a very low risk to Post inflammatory Pigmentation even on skin of colour. We perform a small patch on the area to assess how each clients skin responds. If pigmentation was to form it would only be temporary and it would be observed after the initial patch test. Laser resurfacing is suitable for all skin of colour, we have specific treatment settings to safely treat darker skin tones. If you are nervous about your first Laser Facial Treatment we can simply use gentle settings. There is also minimal risk to bacterial infections as the skin is not broken as with micro needling. If a client has a history of cold sores we would always advise a course of anti viral medications to give peace of mind and reduce any risk of a break out.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE Laser Resurfacing done?
The length of time between your laser resurfacing treatments will depend on our recommendations, your skin type, and other factors. In general, the skin needs about four weeks between laser treatments to recover and be ready for the next session
IS IT PERMANENT
There are no treatments out there that is a permanent solution as we can’t stop the ageing process. After a course of laser resurfacing we always recommend regular annual top up treatments. Many people do notice immediate results on their skin which continue to improve over the next 12 months.
Is laser resurfacing worth it?
Hell yes!! Laser resurfacing is a gold standard advanced treatment and we have a medical NHS laser so it simply doesn’t get any better! It significantly decreases the appearance of fine lines, breakouts and open pores on the face. It can also treat loss of skin tone and improve the texture if you have scars, acne scars or sun damage. You would never consider microdermabrasion or derma-planing again as one laser resurfacing treatment is the equivalent to dozens of microdermabrasion or derma-planing.
How painful is laser resurfacing on face?
Laser Resurfacing is very tolerable and no numbing cream is required. We perform a patch test so that clients can experience the sensation and the skin warmth after treatment only last for about an hour. Your skin can feel tight and hot like it would if you had been to the beach on a very sunny day.
What does your skin look like after laser resurfacing?
Skin will be more red for the day of the treatment and then as your skin heals it will have a more bronzed look. The great thing about the patch test is that we do a number of patch tests at different settings so that you can gauge the down time and decide on which settings you would like.
How many times laser resurfacing treatments are needed?
It simply depends on the concern. For prevention one treatment every year is optimal however generally we recommend 1-3 treatments for a specific skin concern. For more severe acne scars or surgical scars it may be 3-6 treatments. Each treatment is 4 weeks apart.
WHICH IS BETTER CHEMICAL PEEL OR LASER RESURFACING?
Chemical peels do reduce fine lines, open pores and rough skin. Lasers tackle more noticeable skin conditions such as texture and skin tightening, and deeper lines and wrinkles, as well as all the peel benefits. We recommend one Laser Resurfacing treatment once a year to deeply exfoliate and maintain healthy glowing skin.
WHAT IS A BETTER TREATMENT LASER RESURFACING OR MICRODERMABRASION?
Without a shadow of a doubt, Fraction Laser Resurfacing, it works on a much deeper level and has so many more benefits besides exfoliating the top layer of the skin. Microdermabrasion is an outdated, old fashioned dinosaur in the world of aesthetics and cannot compete with the results of a Fractional Laser Resurfacing treatment. Once you have had a Fractional Facial, you will never enquire about a microdermabrasion again and you will never need to.
Is laser resurfacing painful?
Comfort level depends on the settings we are using and the client’s tolerance for pain. All warmth and erythema tends to disappear within 60 mins of treatment and skin has a wind burn feel that will remain for 24-48 hours depending on the settings used. Clients compare the sensation felt during laser treatments to a rubber band snapping against their skin. It does feel warm and it the heat can feel uncomfortable. It’s definitely not any sensation that is long lasting or that cannot be soothed with a cool compress, and the results are so worth it, you’ll never spend money on a microdermabrasion again!

Laser resurfacing and Sun Exposure, what’s the wait time?
As with any resurfacing treatment, Laser based treatment or deep exfoliation treatment, your skin will be sensitive to light exposure. It is extremely important you are careful with your skin for a minimum of 6 weeks after your treatment. Throughout the whole year we advise that you wear SPF any way as gold standard to reduce the signs of ageing. We advise that you stay out of direct sunlight for a minimum of 4 weeks, and if going into the sunshine, try to wear a hat that shades your face, spf 50 and sunglasses to protect your skin. Remember, any laser based treatment or exfoliating treatment will cause light sensitivity and risk of burning if the skin is exposed to direct sunlight.
Is lASER rESURFacing better than C02 Laser?
Laser resurfacing works by creating microscopic holes in the skin which stimulates collagen and elastin, as well as encouraging new skin. This doesn’t damage the top layer of the skin meaning short healing time, comfort throughout treatment and minimal risks. Whereas C02 lasers vaporise the top layer of the skin, meaning much longer healing (as long as 2 weeks, sometimes longer in some cases!), higher discomfort and high risks.
