We have invested in the latest technology for laser acne treatment. We are the first clinic in Birmingham to have the latest Harmony XL Pro Clear Skin Laser. This Laser hand piece is twice the power as the original laser which means it gives better results faster. We always treat the root cause on the inside of the body with specific skin supplements, as well as tackling the skin on the outside. For breakouts we always recommend skin supplements to treat the root cause over skincare any day of the week! For the fastest results we treat the internal gut health and hormones at the same time as the external skin health.
We like to set realistic expectations with our clients in that if their internal skin health is not addressed at the same time as the external skin then results are slower and limited.
Hormones play a significant role in the development of acne, particularly during puberty, menstruation, and times of stress. Over 25% of people continue to suffer from adult acne and it can even be experienced through the peri menopause and menopause.
Unbalanced androgens, such as testosterone stimulate excess oil and this excess oil mixes with dead skin cells and clogs pores. This causes inflammation and acne breakouts. Hormonal fluctuations related to menstrual cycles, pregnancy, and conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can also exacerbate acne.
The fastest was of clearing skin is to balance hormone levels to reduce oil production to manage this condition. This is why are skin supplements are so popular as they treat the root cause that skincare can not reach.
Excess oil production is a key factor in the development of acne. Factors contributing to excess oil production include hormonal imbalances, stress, diet, and certain medications. The skin’s sebaceous glands produce sebum (oil), to protect and hydrate the skin. However, when these glands produce too much oil, it can combine with dead skin cells This clogs pores and breeds bacteria leading to inflammation, redness, breakouts, acne lesions, pimples, blackheads, white heads, milia, and or cysts.
Managing oil production through internal skin supplements, skincare and treatments is crucial for acne prevention and control.
When excess sebum (oil) and dead skin cells clog pores, it creates an ideal environment for bacteria to multiply. This leads to inflammation, redness, and swelling around the affected pores creating acne and breakouts.
It’s essential to be aware that bacteria is not generally the main cause of breakouts as clients would assume. It is well established that hormones play the most significant role which initiates the inflammation response. This is also proven when clients are put on long term antibiotics to clear the acne to find there is no significant change to skin. Antibiotics actually make matters worse long term as they kill all the good essential bacteria in the gut that is pivotal in skin health.
Our skin scanner that is used to take photos of the different layers of skin during our skin consultations regularly demonstrates to clients that they do not have a ‘dirty’ face. Many clients often use products that are so harsh to ‘clean’ their skin they strip the skin barrier and are actually doing more harm than good. This is where we provide lots of education and support.
Hyperkeratinization is a build up of excess skin cells in the hair follicles/ pores. This buildup forms a plug of dead skin cells and oil, effectively clogging the pore. The blockage creates an ideal environment for bacterial growth. The bacteria causes inflammation and the formation of acne breakouts as well as whiteheads, blackheads, and cysts. Addressing this concern with the appropriate exfoliation is crucial in acne treatment.
In the last few years there has been a proven link between gut health and acne, highlighting the importance of a healthy gut. An imbalance in the gut microbiota, known as dysbiosis, can affect the body’s immune response and inflammation levels, both of which are closely tied to acne flare ups. Furthermore, a healthy gut assists in regulating hormones that influence sebum (oil) production. Probiotics and a balanced diet can improve gut health, reducing acne severity by restoring the balance of gut flora and decreasing inflammation in the skin.
Food intolerances and allergies can indirectly contribute to acne by affecting gut health and inflammation. When the body reacts negatively to certain foods, it can lead to an immune response that increases inflammation throughout the body, including the skin. This inflammatory response can make acne breakouts worse increasing oil production which mixes with dead skin creating a breeding ground for bacteria. Laser targets water in the skin which drys the sebaceous gland. This kills bacteria and decreases oil and sebum production long term which in turn reduces acne breakouts.
X CloseThe laser directly targets overactive sebaceous glands, greatly reducing the total number and severity of active lesions, and lessening the inflammation and occurrence of break-outs. The laser stimulates the production of new collagen to improve skin texture, and can reduce scarring that are often associated with acne breakouts.
X CloseA patch test is required before all laser treatments. Depending on skin tone the full treatment can be performed after as little as 30 minutes. During the patch test a number of shots are performed on the face at different settings. This helps establish treatment settings from the sensation felt and the skins response. The treatment feels warm and it can feel a little bit flicky on the skin whilst each shot is administered.
X CloseAfter a thorougher cleanse, the guide is placed onto the skin and a short pulse is released. The applicator is passed over the skin several times before moving onto the neighbouring area, and the process is repeated until the whole area is treated. If there is visible breakouts, a new applicator is used to target these specifically. This applicator will directly treat the sebaceous gland to reduce the oil and sebum, as well as destroying acne causing bacteria. The skin is moisturised and SPF is applied . During treatment protective eye wear will be provided.
X CloseAlmost everyone can be treated, apart from very dark skinned or tanned individuals. If you are pregnant or taking prescription acne medication it is best not to undergo laser or Intense Pulsed Light treatment.
X CloseIPL is often called Laser but IPL & Laser are significantly different and both have massive benefits to treating skin concerns. We often combine both IPL treatments and Laser Treatments in a treatment package to maximise the benefits. We would always discuss this in a Skin Consultation.
X CloseWe recommend to have a treatment every 2 weeks for 6 treatments. Then to maintain the skin, we recommend monthly facials and a laser treatment around every 6 months
X CloseResults from just once Laser acne treatment can last up to 12months. In the early days we recommend a course of 3-6 to treat breakouts and then recommend top up treatments to maintain clear skin and keep the oil production low.

X CloseTreatment is mildly uncomfortable but no anaesthesia is required. Many people describe the sensation as similar to the flick of an elastic band.
X CloseAfter Laser, acne and breakouts may appear to get slightly worse before they get better. This is because there is no back door for the skin and the congestion needs to be drawn out of the skin to clear it. The Laser actually assists the healing process, reducing any scarring that may be left after a breakout.
X CloseImmediately after treatment the skin may appear red and a warm tingling sensation may be felt. The skin can be cooled to ease any discomfort and a calming moisture and SPF is applied.
X CloseLaser Acne Treatment creates heat which sterilises and reduces oil production. It helps to normalise the P-Acne bacteria on the skin’s surface and reduce the inflammation of the acne-causing bacteria. The Laser therapy also stimulates new collagen and elastin which is great for helping prevent and repair acne scarring. We can combine this Laser facial with IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and a peel to exfoliate and sterilise the skin further and reduce any red or brown marks that can be left behind breakouts. By reducing the oil flow, sterilising the skin and reducing inflammation, we are a) reducing the risk of more hyperpigmentation/post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and b) reducing the risk of more red marks on the face which can cause future acne scarring and unhappiness.
X CloseLaser treatments can quickly dry up acne by killing the acne bacteria deep in the skin which reduces the inflammation. It has the added benefit of reducing redness caused by breakouts and acne scars.
X CloseIPL is similar to laser in that skin can initially break out before the skin gets clear. There is no back door for skin so its good to remember its part of the process and is only temporary.
X CloseThe treated area can become quite red immediately after treatment but this usually disappears within a couple of hours. Most people experience no other side effects but very rarely a small blister could form or the skin may become temporarily lighter or darker.
X CloseLaser Facials stimulate a healing response in the skin that reduce scarring from acne especially if it’s recent scarring. For older scars or deeper ice pick scars etc, we would recommend our medical RF Micro-Needling or Laser Resurfacing.
